E-Mailing alerts

I'm not having any success in getting 1.3 to e-mail alerts to me. The settings are very straightforward, yet when I check the Exchange server, I see the e-mails aren't even getting off the Essentials box. I think I've tried every combination possible of addresses, server names,IP's, etc. What the heck am I missing?
