OME 1.3 splash screen hangs - how to reduce number of stored alerts

Hello,

My colleagues are having problems logging into OME (doesn't matter which browser they use). I've read on the forums that one possible reason is that you have more than 10,000 alerts stored. As this is the case for us, I'd like to reduce them but without clearing the entire lot. Is that possible? How would I go about doing so?
